Welcome to Half Assed Healthnut! My name is Shonda Spencer and I’m an ACE certified Health Coach, an AFAA certified Personal Trainer, and a Precision Nutrition Level 1 coach. All that means that I have some training in how the body functions, the science of nutrition, and coaching techniques for helping people create change. But what I really have to offer is simple strategies for creating a healthy eating plan when you don’t have lots of time or money, and you don’t want to live in the kitchen.
I’ve worked in the fitness industry for the last 7 years and I have witnessed countless women (and men) who are working hard in the gym, showing up every day, sweating their faces off, and getting nowhere. Many of them are getting stronger, improving their cardiovascular health, feeling more confident, and creating a new tribe of encouraging gym friends, but they aren’t seeing the weight (or fat) loss that they are working hard for.
Why? Because as awesome as exercise is for your mood, your health, and your confidence, it’s nearly impossible for most of us to create physical change with exercise alone! You may have heard the saying, “abs are made in the kitchen”, and I can tell you first hand that it’s absolutely true! There will always be those lucky few who can outrun their fork, but if that was you, would you even be reading this? It’s not me either!
I fell in love with fitness in my 30s after having a difficult time bouncing back from my 3rd pregnancy. I found some great Zumba classes, attended regularly, made new gym friends, and eventually decided to start teaching. In 6 months of taking classes 5 or 6 days a week, I lost about 20 pounds – YAY! I was at a healthy weight at this point, but still wanted to lose a few more pounds, or at least swap some squishy areas for a little more muscle. I began teaching Body Pump twice a week, and taught Zumba 6 to 8 times per week, but the only thing that changed was that my joints began to hurt, I felt sore all the time, and I was constantly starving. I figured if I taught 2 or 3 classes a day, I deserved that cheeseburger! I kept this craziness up for a couple of years, then began reducing the number of classes I taught and decided it was time to change my eating habits.
I started swapping fast food for whole foods, replacing my diet soda with water, and cut refined carbs. This is when I began to see changes in my body, and I started feeling better!
Eating “clean” (whatever that means) has been part of my life for the last 5 years, and it’s second nature to me now. When clients and friends ask me about how to change their eating habits, I find that there are 3 typical barriers to them making lasting change. Since I’ve figured out how to overcome these barriers, I want to share my knowledge with you! Here are the reasons (or excuses) that I typically hear:
- I just don’t have time
- It’s too expensive to eat healthy
- I don’t like to cook
There may be a few other reasons out there (my kids are picky, I don’t like healthy food, etc) but these top 3 are the ones I know I can help you with! Picky kids and immature taste buds may get some attention as well, but we’ll focus on the big 3. 😉
My primary goals with this website are to help you find the time you need to shop for, prep, cook, and eat the kind of food that will help you feel your best and reach your physical goals, share tips for doing all of that in an affordable way, and provide half-assed shortcuts that can help you spend less time in the kitchen.
